As a long-time fan of Carter's YA series (The Goddess books, The Blackcoat Rebellion), I was very excited to read her first middle grade novel, Simon Thorn and the Wolf's Den. Simon is such a likeable character that he hooked me from page one, and I immediately became immersed in his journey to discover his family secrets and the meaning behind his "hidden talents". I'm always blown away by Carter's depth of her characters, and Simon Thorn doesn't disappoint. From his happy-go-lucky Dolphin friend, Jam, to the sassy rocker spider chick, Ariana, along with the secretive Winter, I found myself rooting for not only Simon, but his friends as well. The adult characters are equally multidimensional, and Simon's evolving relationships keep me hooked through the entire book. imon Thorn is fast paced, exciting, and multilayered in the sense that both children and adults can find things to love about the story. The plot is engaging and leaves you wanting more. I am already eagerly awaiting book 2!.
A thrilling debut in the tradition of Rick Riordan and Brandon Mull about a boy who discovers a secret race of animal shape shifters. Twelve-year-old Simon Thorn’s life has never been easy or normal, but things like being bullied at school and living in a cramped Manhattan apartment with his Uncle Darrell are nothing compared to his biggest secret: He can talk to animals. But when his mom is suddenly kidnapped by a herd of rats, Simon finds out that he, his mom, and his uncle are all Animalgams—people born with the ability to change into an animal at will. In search of his mom, Simon discovers the Animalgam Academy based at the Central Park Zoo. There he learns about the fractured five kingdoms that make up this secret world . . . and realizes he may be the only one who can save it. his action-packed page-turner is perfect for fans of the Spirit Animals and The School of Good and Evil series.
